Mutual Exchange Basic Information

1. What is a Mutual Home Swap?
Answer: It is a swap between two or more social housing sector tenants who will move into each others properties on a permanent basis, alll parties involved will have to sign a new tenancy agreement with their new respective landlords.

2. How long does it take to Exchange?
Answer: 42 days from the day all parties hand in their paperwork to their respective landlords.

3. I have rent arrears can I still exchange?
Answer: No, you will need to clear your rent before you can exchange

4. Is it free to exchange?
Answer: Yes there are no legal fees involved, though all property viewing prior to a decision on a swap and location plus removal expenses will have to be paid for by the tenants.

5. Can i pay someone to exchange with me?
Answer: Do not offer any rewards or cash incentives in return for an exchange. It is illegal and you and your family could be evicted from your property by your council or housing association.

6. Can i give someone gifts to exchange with me?
Answer: Do not offer any rewards or cash incentives in return for an exchange. It is illegal and you and your family could be evicted from your property by your council or housing association.

7. Will i have the Right to Buy if i swap?
Answer: For an accurate answer we suggest you check with the respective landlords and do not rely on the information provided by other tenants.

8. Can i form a chain to complete a swap, as i can not find a direct move?
Answer: Yes you can look for 3rd 4th 5th parties etc to complete a chain so that you can all move!

9. Can i move anywhere?
Answer: You can move anywhere within England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland including off shore islands but not including the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Landlord and Permissons

1. Do I need my landlord's permission to swap?
Answer: Yes, you will need to fill in paperwork and await a decision on a move, If you dont you will be liable to eviction and a fine.

2. Can my landlord refuse permission?
Answer: Yes

3. On what grounds can my landlord refuse permission?
Answer:

  • Non payment of rent inclusive service charges.
  • An eviction notice has already been served.
  • The properties are not suitable for each of the families looking to swap for example to big or small.
  • Adapted for disabled tenants or only suitable for tenants of a particular age such as over 55 years and the other party does not fit the criteria.

4. What checks should I make before I agree to swap?
Answer:

  • Right to Buy option if this is important too you.
  • Rent, Council Tax and any service charges
  • Condition of the property and outside space, making sure that you find it acceptable prior to signing your paperwork.

1. Who should I tell I've swapped?
Answer: Prior to moving you need to inform all of the below that applies to you!

  • Family Friends
  • Employers
  • Banks and Building Societies
  • Housing Benefit and Council Tax office(If you are in receipt)
  • Utility Bills: Electric, Gas and Water suppliers Home and Mobile Telephone Companies
  • Tv Licensing, Sky or Cable Companies
  • DVLA To change any vechicle documents and license details
  • Credit Card Companies, Catalogues and Debt Collectors
  • Benefits Agency Child Benefit, Income Support, Jobseekers, Incapacity, Disability Living Allowance
  • Carers, Home help and Social Workers
  • If you are attending any of the following Nurseries, Schools, Colleges and University
  • GP Surgery, Hospital if attending, Dentist and Optician
  • Online Catalogues and Auction Sites such as Ebay

2. Will my landlord pay for my removal expenses?
Answer: No, you must arrange to pay this yourself.

3. I can not afford to pay removal expenses, can i get any help?
Answer: If you are in receipt of benefits you maybe able to apply for a social fund loan which is interest free.

Answer: RedMoves is an online advertising site for tenants living in social housing that are looking to complete a mutual exchange of their property

Answer: By joing this site and advertising, we can provide you with the facilties for your advert to be seen by thousands of online browsers

3. Can anyone apply to join RedMoves?
Answer: Yes as long as they are either a secure or assured tenant living in the social housing sector.

4. How do I Join?

Answer: By clicking on the join button in the site navigation.

5. Will I have to pay?
Answer: No it is free to join at the moment though we may charge in the near future.

6. How do I find out about possible swaps?
Answer: By searching through the properties listed on the site.

7. Can I search for a home without having to register?

Answer: Yes all guests can view the adverts though can not contact the advertiser without registering as a member.

8. Why are site guests not allowed to view adverts?
Answer: Simply to help avoid anyone and everyone from viewing the details of tenants who are serious about moving! By doing this only serious movers are likely to join and advertise!

Registered Members of RedMoves

1. When I register with RedMoves, who can see my details?
Answer: Members can only see the details that you have choosen for them to view! However the administrators can view all details provided at the time of registration except for any banking details. You can be assured that this site does not sell your information to any third party companies ever!

2. Can I add a photograph of my property?
Answer: Yes you can add property photographs, though we reserve the right to remove unsuitable content without prior warning.

3. What can I do if I've forgotten my username or password?
Answer: Click on the links provided for forgotten username and password in the login area and your details will be sent to your email account that you registered with

4. Can i edit my advert?
Answer: Yes you can. You can Edit your advert by viewing the advert and looking for the edit icon (image) in the top left corner of the advert. This will automatically allow you to change your advert details.

5. There is a home I'm interested in. What do I do now?
Answer: First contact the member, ask all the questions you need answering, if your both happy arrange a viewing of each others homes, take measurements and pictures to help you in your decision. Once happy contact your landlords and ask about exchanging your homes they will guide you through the simple process.

6. How do I cancel my membership?
Answer: Contact RedMoves with your name, username and the address of the email account you registered with, we will do the rest!

7. No one has contacted me about my advert?
Answer: Firstly make sure that you have allowed other members to contact you, you can check this by going to your advert then click on the edit button at the top of the advert there is two options to recieve mail and to not receive mail choose the "yes" option, members can only see your email address when you reply back to them!
